Tree trimming in Erie
Cut the right branches and the tree gets stronger, not just smaller.
- Cuts made at the branch collar
- No topping
- Debris chipped or hauled

Good pruning starts with a reason for every cut: a dead limb that could drop, a branch rubbing the roof, a crown so thick that wet snow loads it like a sail. Remove those and the tree is safer and healthier. Remove the wrong ones and you create weak regrowth.
Our climbers work through the crown and make cuts just outside the branch collar so the wound can seal. We don't top trees. If a tree has outgrown its spot and pruning can't fix it, we'll say so and quote removal instead. Weak forks can also be supported with cabling.

Types of trimming we do
Most jobs mix a few of these. We'll explain which cuts we plan to make before the climber goes up.
Deadwooding
Dead, dying and broken branches removed from the canopy before they fall on someone.
Clearance pruning
Limbs cut back from the roof, chimney, gutters, siding, driveway and the service line to the house.
Crown thinning
Selected interior branches removed to let light and wind through without changing the tree's shape.
Crown raising
Low limbs taken off so you can mow, park and walk underneath.
Trimming vs. topping
Proper pruning
Cuts back to a lateral branch or the trunk. The tree keeps its structure and the wounds close over.
Topping
Lopping the top off at a random height. The tree sends up dense, weakly attached sprouts that break easily later. We don't do it.
When a tree is due for trimming
A tree that hasn't been touched in five or more years usually shows one of these:
- Branches touching the roofShingles and gutters wear fast, and squirrels get an easy path in.
- Dead limbs in the canopyBare branches in summer are the ones that come down in the first storm.
- Branches rubbing each otherRubbing wears through the bark and opens the wood to decay.
- A crown you can't see throughThick crowns catch more wind and hold more snow.
- Low limbs over the drivewayTrucks, snowplows and people keep hitting them.
Safety first. Pruning from a ladder with a chainsaw is how a lot of people get hurt. Leave anything you can't reach from the ground to a climber.
